‘Paper Tigers’ is a controversial article by Wesley Yang. It's focused on how Asian Americans are unable to compete fairly with their white counterparts in the corporate world. The author argues that the reason behind this is the fact that they lack something that the whites have. Some people found the information in the article as nerve bending, something that attracted a heated debate among the Asian- American community. Most of the people who read it called it an embarrassment to the minority groups and especially those people belonging to the Asian –American group. The article is relatively long, expounding on the emotional outbursts of someone who is found to have issues his identity. The author seems to target a specific audience- especially a composition of the Asian male populace. Any male who hails from the same ethnic group will tend to categorize himself with the frustrations of Yang. As the article opens, the author expresses his dissatisfaction with regard to his facial outlook, sending signals of someone with low self esteem. He is found to be very self critical and only pin points the wrong things that he has. One of the most outstanding characteristics about the author and his article is his openness. He freely expresses his thoughts and ideas. At the beginning of the article, he expresses his dissatisfaction being of Asian-American origin. He describes his face as that of a reptilian. He says “an expression that is nearly reptilian in its impassivity” (Yang 362). All these thoughts are self critiquing, and self blaming, which eventually deteriorates the impression and thoughts that one can have about himself. This is indeed a very good indication of someone with identity crisis. His approach raises many questions on the topic of ethnicity in a free world. It is this kind of approach that makes one to wonder at how one can lack pride in his or her own ethnic group. He says “I sometimes suspect my face signifies to other Americans: an invisible person” (Yang 362). Yang is found to portray Asians as a group of people whose culture can be best describe as timid and easily wooed around by more superior ethnic groups. What is more aggravating is to read statements which imply that the solution for racism can be found when a person seeks to share the benefits of the white. As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as a superior culture. These beliefs are fallacious perceptions created by people to woo others into thinking that there is a standard culture for calibration purposes. Such a statement will be least expected during the 21st century when a lot of efforts were garnered to eradicate ethnic hatred and racial segregation. American culture is diverse and it
