In the video game, "Batman: Arkham Asylum," developed by Rocksteady Studios, the cast of the game is dominated by the appearance of male characters. They are smart, masculine and wear badass costumes. The two leading females, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, are quite the adversaries themselves, but they are flawed characters. Their main purpose seems to be just to slow down Batman from getting to the Joker. Both Quinn and Ivy were created to represent their own version of a distinct female personality, but eventually were sexualized to cater to adolescent teenage males. Harley Quinn was once a highly educated psychiatrist who decided to intern at the Asylum, but was gullible enough to be charmed into becoming a villain. Her first task as an intern was to treat the notorious Joker and find out his secrets. Session after session, the Joker constantly bombarded her with compliments and gifts. She developed feelings for the Joker where she convinced herself that they were in love. From being the Joker’s psychiatrist, she became his partner in crime because he sweet talked her into helping him escape. All it took was a few compliments and gifts for an educated, independent woman to fall for the stereotypical bad boy. Not only did she fall in love with the Joker, but she also entered an abusive relationship with him as well. Throughout the game the Joker constantly mistreats and plays mind games with Harley, but she consentingly always goes back to him. She develops dependence on him to always save her while she carries out his agenda for him. Harley has also sought the Joker’s approval and defines herself by what the Joker thinks of her. Whenever the Joker gets angry at her, she constantly apologizes, whines and blows kisses at him even though it usually isn’t her fault things go bad. After failing her task to stop Batman, the Joker shuns her and uninvited her to the grand ceremony. She did all the hard work to get everything in place for the Joker’s grand ceremony and he tells her she is not allowed to attend because she failed him. It is debatable whether the Joker actually loves Harley or uses her as another distraction for Batman; just having the Joker’s attention and approval is enough for Harley.
