Psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes that seeks to describe and explain aspects of human thought, feelings, perceptions and actions. This is done in many different ways and fin various schools of thought. It is these different approaches that divide psychology but also with approaches comes assumptions. These assumptions shape the approach and also determine which type of research method is used for each approach. One approach to psychology is called Behaviorism. Behaviorism is concerned with explaining why we do things (our behavior) and how that behavior can be changed if necessary. Behaviorism basic assumption about human beings is that human personality can be learned by experience around them. It can be learned by either classical or operant conditioning. Watson suggested that we should ignore concepts of unclear things like ‘’ the mind’’ and concentrate more on what we can observe or measure. Humans are like other animals and we can study animals to find out about human behavior. In brief, Watson proposed that psychology should aim to develop techniques that can control and alter human behavior. Behaviorists also believe that there no stages of development and that children only develop more behaviors after they experience them and add them to their repertoire. Behaviorism relies on experimentation to back up their assumptions. However, this approach suffers criticism. The main criticism is that Behaviorism doesn’t acknowledge biological factors in behavior. It doesn’t consider individual differences in behavior or the mental processes behind behavior. This approach is in contrast to the cognitive, psychodynamic and physiological approach. The cognitive psychology took over the lead status from behaviorism.
