There is an undeniable relationship between drug use and crime, although the connection between the two may appear blurred. Specifically the connection between crime and the use of drugs, like cocaine and heroin has been a key area of debate and research. The characterization of drug related crime does not include violations of drug laws, however it does include acts of crimes that are committed by people that are using drugs or in the process of buying drugs or selling (Crossland, 2003). The idea is drug use leads to crime. The association between violent drug use and crime can be put into three categories. First is the psycho-pharmacological, where the physical properties of a drug can affect the user's mind which leads to violent behavior. Secondly, is systemic in which violent behavior is the standard and expected behavior of the drug culture. Finally is economic compulsive is when the addictive features of a drug leads the user to act with violent behavior to steal items in order to sell them to pay for their drug habit. This is perhaps the most accepted link between drug use and crime (Crossland, 2003). The research used to support that drug use is the reason to commit crime relies on the theory that crime is committed by people who are on drug. The research falls into two types. First are the offenders who have been caught and are tested for drug use. The findings show that a large amount of people arrested did test positive for illegal drugs. The second type supports the idea that drug use leads to crime is obtained from treatment studies. These studies evaluate the criminal activity of drug users who are going through treatment for their drug use problem. The above methods of research have been greatly criticized. Not all criminals use illegal drugs or are dependent on any drugs and not all drug dependent criminals commit crimes. Measures used to review drug use can fabricate misleading results. For example,
