Quotation Marks have six main uses in writing. The first one is using quotation marks for titles of short works, such as when you put the title of a book in your writing. One example is “The DK Handbook." It helps the reader to know exactly what part is the actual title of the book, song, etc. The second use is using quotation marks to indicate you are using a word as a word. This is one use that has changed some with technology. In today’s use the quotation marks are usually replace with italic formatting. The third use is using quotation marks to indicate technical terms and words from other languages. This is another one that has been replaced by using italics instead of quotation marks. Back in the day of the typewriter italic formatting was not an option which is why they used quotation marks instead. The forth use is using quotation marks to show irony. The fifth use is using quotation marks to indicate a direct quote. This is a common use in many essays written for classes. The sixth us is using quotation marks to indicate speech. This is another common use in many essays as well as everyday writing for work. In the past I have had many problems using quotations in the appropriate places. I would often confuse when using them to indicate speech on whether the punctuation such as a comma, question mark, or period goes inside the quotation marks or outside. I would always get points taken off my papers for this all throughout elementary and high school. I never had to deal with direct quotes in school in elementary or high school so that problem never came up back then. When typing papers for school I would always leave out the quotation marks for using a word as a word, indicating technical terms, words from other languages, and to show irony.
