Franz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague (at that time, part of Austria), to Hermann Kafka and Julie Kafka. Kafka had a really rough life growing up, always being rejected by his father and feeling like an outsider. Unlike is parents who strongly believed in their religion, Kafka was and "assimilated non-believer." Kafka had a lot of hatred towards himself because he had a small body and a highly intellectual personality. Another reason he had self-hatred was because he had a financial and emotional needs. Kafka finally gained some confidence when he began to work at an accident insurance office after he attended Ferdinand-Karls University and graduated with a doctorate in law. Most of Kafka's work was affected by the way his dad rejected his dreams of being a writer. His stories dealt with the struggle between father and son, or a scorned individual pleading for innocence. In 1908 Kafka was published for the first time, he publish eight short pieces which he called Meditation. On September 22nd, 1912 Kafka spent eight hours writing his first major story, The Judgment. In November of 1912 Kafka began writing The Metamorphosis which is about a salesman who wakes up one morning transformed into a giant bug. The Metamorphosis went on to be regarded as a cornerstone in the foundation of modern literature. Most of Kafka's stories are considered impossible to come to a definite conclusion, he couldn't even come to definite conclusion on his books. Kafka also wrote In the Penal Colony, a story revolving around a complicated but efficient machine of terrifying violence. One of Kafka's book which is regarded by many as his greatest work is The Trial. During his life Kafka seemed to never be able to stay one girl for too long. Kafka had many girlfriends, number of broken engagements, and affairs throughout his life.
