Traditionally, women have been considered the weaker of the sexes, so it comes as no surprise that many people don’t feel strange about the fact that men earn more money than women. However, society puts an emphasis on equal human rights; therefore, gender inequality in the work place has pitted women against the companies they work for. In the book, "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," Barbara Ehrenreich depicts her experience of living at the bottom economic class of society; she works a number of rough jobs like being a waitress, a house-cleaning maid, a Wal-Mart clerk, and so on. Ehrenreich’s book primarily discusses problems like power struggles and human dignity, but gender issues are also addressed as she explains how impoverished girls are taken advantage of by various companies. Feminist theory claims that women are treated differently because of their gender. Today, although women are gaining more rights and more respect than before, they are still suffering from discrimination in different ways. For example, women’s appearances are emphasized more than their talents; moreover, women are considered to be inherently intellectually inferior to men. Additionally, pregnant women suffer from discrimination and pressure from their employers. Overall, according to the feminist theory, Ehrenreich’s book highlights the many ways in which gender inequality continues to persist in the workplace. Women have been historically regarded as the weaker group, but an undeniable truth is that females are getting more powerful and being more independent than before; sometimes, they are even being more dominant than men in the workplace. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Women have increasingly attained higher levels of education and experienced an increase in their earnings as a proportion of men's earnings.” This means that women are facing a new situation in the workplace where they can become more educated and fight for a brighter future. And as more women climb to higher levels of society, many males feel threatened. Males insist that females in the workplace are taking power away from their hands. However, many women still face severe discrimination problems. Discrimination is not only expressed by attacking women verbally or firing them for unknown reasons, but through people’s thoughts that women are weaker than men. For example, some men in college will persuade women to change their major upon hearing that they want to major in Mechanical Engineering. This phenomenon is not unusual because men naturally think that women are weaker than them in some fields; sometimes, because females do not have physical strength, men think that women do not have the mental acuity to deal with the complex problems of these particular academic fields. Hence, discrimination does not only happen when males are intending to hurt females, but it is also displayed in men’s unconscious reactions and thoughts, especially those that believe that women cannot achieve success on their own. Looking at the woman’s role in traditional society, it is easy to see how women have been discriminated against throughout time. In “Diversification and Conflicts in Women’s Roles in the Late 19th Century Society,” Mihaila indicates that in the past, society thought that women “need only half-civilization” because of their “weaker nature” and their duty to obey men. Also, Mihaila talks about females’ positions concerning political rights, which were viewed as inferior since “women’s intellectual inferiority was considered indisputable” (3). The word “indisputable” shows how females are considered as a lower class of human being than males. People may think that an old-fashioned society emphasized rituals and manners, and men are required to be gentle and treat women kindly; however, although males have principles and manners, they still think they are higher-level creatures than women. For example, it is common knowledge that men are allowed to go out of their homes and find jobs; during this process, men can make friends in different circles and enrich their lives.
