In the article "The Need for Spanking," Betsy Hart illustrates that spanking a child is more effective than words. Hart says "We often hear that actions speak louder than words, so when it is needed, it could teach the child right from wrong." Controlled spanking of a child does not mean they are not loved or demonstrate any type of abuse. Hart argues that this disciplinary method will only benefit them in the long run, opposed to Elizabeth Gershoff arguing it will cause the child to suffer emotional behavior in the long run. However, to them it might seem cruel but they will come to comprehend it is for their well-being. On the other hand, Hart questions Elizabeth Gershoff , a psychologist and researcher at Columbia University's National Center for Children in Poverty, feels the complete opposite as Betsy Hart. Gershoff believes spanking can lead to long term behavioral issues. However, Gershoff never conducted an actual study to prove she was right. All she did to come up with this conclusion was reevaluate dozens of previous studies. Other various psychologists went ahead and pointed out that Gershoff has no evidence what so ever, to prove that spanking can lead to behavioral problems. Gershoff is aware of it but states, "Americans need to reevaluate why we believe it is reasonable to hit young, vulnerable children, when it is against the law to hit other adults, prisoners, and even animals.  In general, being a parent as well leads to agreeing with Hart's opinion on spanking. I have recently introduced my 3 year old daughter to the Spanking Method. Kids sometimes do not know when enough is enough or when to stop. A child might think being scolded is a joke.
