In the American literary classic, "The Great Gatsby," by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main character, Jay Gatsby, is portrayed as a successful, rich and worldly man. Many people have heard different stories of Gatsby's life, but little do they know there is only one main reason he flaunts his wealth. Gatsby is trying to win back the love of his life Daisy who he has not seen in years and is now married to another man. This novel is a tragic love affair in the 20s. While Gatsby may seem like he is all about materialism, he is actually an idealist. In the book, Gatsby is known for his fame and wealth, not many people know him personally. Many people only knew of Gatsby because of his extravagant parties where people just showed up even if they didn't know him. "Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party without simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission  (41). Gatsby gives off a materialistic personality because he does not show much care to who is around because he wants people to enjoy all of which he has. When Gatsby talks about his house he makes it seem like it is his most prized possession, and he wants to show it off. " "'My house looks well, doesn't it?", he demanded" (89). From this quote it shows that he likes to show off his house, so people will encourage it. Gatsby's neighbor, Nick was talking to Jordan about Gatsby wanting to impress Daisy, that was main reason he wanted her to come to his house. "He wants her to see his house" (79), this shows that he wants to mainly be known for his house. Gatsby is seen as a materialist because he shows off his house and makes it seem like it is his most important possession. Many rumors are spread around about Gatsby, his past and how he got his money.
