Sports have changed much over the years. From many different colored players joining to verbal and political activism inside of the sport itself. In this paper i will show how sports have changed drastically over the last century(mostly football, even though it's been happening in all sports) for the better when it comes to human opinion and rights of the players. Players in the NFL in the 40's and 50's were very much "under the gun" when it came to interviews. They were watched and coached to make sure they didn't say anything politically incorrect so that the team, owners especially , wouldn't have to support a view that was unpopular at that time. Today, sports have become a frenzy of opinionated people who communicate through the internet; Facebook, twitter and standard media interviews at their fingertips. Players in the NFL have come such a long way that they honestly do not even care what the owners or their teammates even think when it comes to their opinions. Players want their voices and opinions to be heard. This is an age like no other in sports where players talk about everything from war, politics and even pop culture. However, this has opened up a lot of doorways for not only players but coaches to speak out against their organizations as well when they're not happy. In the 50s, the players had to suck it up. No matter what their opinion or moral standards or beliefs, they had to keep their mouth shut to keep the organization happy. This leads me to my final point which is a huge one in today's society. Sexual preference. In the 1950's it was unheard of for a player in any sport to come out and openly say that they were gay. If they did they were immediately let go by the team and no other team would want anything to do with them because of the social stigma that came with being gay.
