"Tsurezuregusa: Essays in Idleness," is a zuihitsu written by Yoshida Kenko. It has 243 sections and is written in narrative sequences. These essays have various types of themes such as landscape, seasons, people, etc. Kenko uses very unique style of writing, because majority of Essays in Idleness consists of his opinions of what he sees or felt. It is more like journals than essays. The name of the title Tsurezure is well described for these collections of essays. Not only the surrounding environment, but I was thinking that, maybe, Kenko was most interested in individual human being itself and how they live in this society. These essays enable readers to explore his mind and take his objective opinions human beings through his point of view. Among many essays, his view of cultivation stands out to me the most. Kenko states that education is the important thing to have in society. In the first essay of "If One Is Born in This World," he said that men should be cultivated even though they have beauty and good personality. "What a shame it is when men of excellent appearance and character prove hopelessly inept in social encounters with their inferiors in both position and appearance, solely because they have badly educated" (823). I believe his statement is true, because education gives people more knowledge, wisdom, and enable to have open minded. Also, it will gain respect from others. For example, if a boss writes a report which has a lot of grammatical and vocabularies errors, other colleagues will look down on him/her and questions themselves whether he/she is qualified for that position. Depends on country and cultures, the education norm define differently. However, it helps people become a part of member of the society they live in and prepare what is required in the society.
