Eating can be much more than putting food in your mouth; it can be an fun and adventurous experience. However, it becomes a big issue when all we do is stuff ourselves with food without really being conscious of what we are eating. But unfortunately, the pace of life in the twenty-first century forces us to do exactly that. People have their own love-hate relationships with food; however, at the end of the day food is what gives them comfort and shelter. Nothing can beat that moment of pure bliss of returning home after a long day to a plateful of steaming, delightful home-made food cooked with love by a mother. This is something which is gradually vanishing from our daily lives and is being taken over by the monster named “fast food." We no longer sit at a table with our family to enjoy a meal; we eat on the run or while driving. We neglect that part of our lives which keeps us functioning. This fast food culture is mostly predominant amongst kids and teenagers and therefore its prevalence can be seen in school and college dining halls, and the dining hall at Wesleyan is no different. Although there are healthy choices at the dining hall, the perception of some Wesleyan students is that the vegetables served in the dining hall are not fresh and even though they want to eat healthy, they do not have enough nutritious and appetizing choices for which they turn into eating junk food. Different countries have different traditions for food, similarly, D’Andrea Dixon, a freshman on campus from Atlanta, shared her unique relationship with food, “On New Year’s we make collard greens and black eyed peas because they are said to bring good luck”. She thinks that food is a big part of her family’s lifestyle because it is woven in the many generations of her family.
