Nike is one of the leading athletic wear brands, and uses sports advertising to better market their products. The image I will analyze is an advertisement that corresponds with Nike's World Cup commercial. The ad I have chosen is one of the five creative ads used for Nike's "Write The Future" spread that was created in 2010 by Wieden and Kennedy. All five of these advertisements depict a soccer player in the game frozen as a statue in powerful and intense poses. These images give off the same intense vibe and display a powerful message that can be relatable to Nike's athletic audience. The ad displays a line of players in yellow jerseys and navy blue shorts to the right of the image. The main focus of the image is a grey statue figure, and is placed to the left of the image. In the background, there is a stadium audience that is blurred and also a player from the opposing team is in red to the left of the statue. The overall picture has a cloudy feel with the majority of the ad being black and white with touches of muted colors. In this essay, I will analyze Nike's overall use of color, text, layout, and audience in one of their advertisements promoting the World Cup. The use of color plays a big part in the emotion, the intensity, and the mood of the image. The image does have color, but overall the image is a dark tone. This dark tone gives the audience a weary and intense feeling that displays the competitive game of soccer going on. Chapter 9 states, "A third important element of visual design is use of color, which can contribute significantly to the visual appeal of an argument and move readers emotionally and imaginatively" (Ramage 181) This ad appeals to the audience's emotions by the use of dark grey and black tones. Also, color is used in the jerseys of the players to the right of the image.
