College athletics are an important part of America’s sports society. Along with professional sports, college sports are watched by millions. Tournaments like March Madness, The Road to Omaha, and the overwhelming amount of football bowl games televised nationally, bring in large revenue for participating universities. All of this spotlight and national attention for colleges and universities would not happen if it were not for student athletes. College athletes deserve more credit than they are given and I believe they also deserve a cut of the profit that is received through large sports tournaments. Student athletes should be given more money outside of scholarships and aid because they help to make more money for the schools, students always need extra money to live off of, and dedicate all their time to that sport so it is basically a job. Universities rely primarily on donations from alumni donors and government funding to keep their universities from going into debt. However, certain major universities are beginning to rely on their athletics to pay the bills. Schools like University of Florida, University of Kentucky, Louisiana State University, and University of Southern California have powerhouse athletic programs that year in and year out bring in an extravagant amount of money to help fund various parts of the university’s spending needs. Really, these student athletes are working for these schools to make the school money and do not see even a small portion of that money in their pockets. It is unlawful for these kids to be working for free just to help out the schools. I feel that if the students were given extra pocket money it could even be more of an incentive for these students to excel in their athletics and if the sports got better it would bring in even more money for these schools. Giving extra pocket money to these students would be a great idea for both the university and the athletes who represent them.
