Before the Internet, Americans wrote letters, telephoned, or met together to stay connected in their personal lives. As the Internet expanded, networking grew from the first governmental command center to a worldwide social media sites (Goble). Social media sites are online societies to communicate virtually with friends, family, peers, colleagues, and strangers. Popular social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and My Space. People all over the globe, who want to stay in contact with others, use these sites. There are a few aspects of social media that are negatively impacting American culture like student success, relationships, and promoting criminal activities. Social media is causing students to be distracted from doing their school work. In most classes where students have access to computers, they are accessing social media sites instead of having their full-undivided attention focused on their instructor. When students are not fully engaged in the teacher’s daily lecture, they may not be able to understand the homework assignments. Often when students are at home, social media distracts them when doing homework. A CSU psychology professor, Larry D. Rosen, says that “middle school, high school, and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades” (Rosen). Continually checking Facebook breaks the student’s concentration and they may miss details or steps to complete their homework accurately. In turn, some students will argue that social media helps them to do their homework or get better grades by asking for more information on line. A non-profit website that presents fact stated, “students who used social networking sites while studying scored 20% lower on tests” (ProCon.org).
