The main point that Christian faith leader, Martin Luther argued is that, while Christian faith is looked at as an easy undertaking by many, it is by those who are not truly familiar with the power of faith and the influence it has over oneself. Without this understanding, it is not possible to understand faith or make educated comments about it. Before Luther mentions the three things faith is responsible for, he makes some key distinctions into how faith should be viewed. The first is to better the soul. Luther distinguishes two different natures within human beings: the spiritual nature or inner soul, and the body. He argues that earthly acts can only benefit the body, but only the soul can accept the word of God. Because of this, nothing you do with or for your body will make any difference. Thus faith is the only way to better your spiritual nature. Also, having faith is the only way to realize that we’re entirely at fault with sin and thus are damnable for it. By understanding this, faith is the only route to becoming a new person and redeeming these sins. Faith plays three different roles to Luther. The first is that faith liberates you from the law. Faith is the most important thing to strive for and having faith is following God’s word, which, Luther describes, is above anything worldly. Therefore, if you have faith and follow God’s word, you are above the law. The second role that faith plays is by honoring God. This is because faith is the highest form of trust and respect. By displaying this sort of faith in God, your soul displays it’s complete obedience. Luther argues that one who does not put faith in God is instead setting their own self up as the idol they worship and by doing this, cast God as the liar and as being untrustworthy.
