In this class, we were taught that France generally favored men as their leaders and role models. From Charlemagne to Napoleon Bonaparte, the list of male leaders in France goes on. But what about women leaders? Were there women that held any leadership or role model roles in the history of France? I decided to search for women leaders in France and only a few appeared on this list of leaders and role models. Seeing the list, I felt that the importance of women leaders has not been emphasized enough. In order to emphasize the importance of women leaders in France, I decided that this would be the theme to my travel in France. The two regions that I will be traveling to are Alsace and Burgundy. First, I will start my journey in Alsace. Alsace is the German part of France that lies on the West bank of the river Rhine. It shares its border with Germany on the North and East side, and Switzerland on the South. Alsace’s capital is known as Strasbourg, and this city gives the region a “central European feel”. Strasbourg’s villages are filled with brightly painted houses with steep roofs and half-timbered houses. With this European vibe and it’s unique houses, Alsace stands apart from any other region. This is where I will be staying. Along with the unique villages, lies the Louise Weiss building in the Wacken district of Strasbourg. This is where I will be going to first. The Louise Weiss building is the official seat of the European Parliament, and this where the officials meet 12 sessions a year and lasts about 4 days each. In addition, all of the votes must take place here. The Louise Weiss building was inspired after the late Louise Weiss, who was a famous journalist, feminist, and a female European politician. Louis Weiss came from a cosmopolitan family of Alsace, meaning that she nearly lived her whole life in Alsace. She committed herself to women’s suffrage, was active in the French Resistance and stood for French parliamentary elections. Although she was greatly known as a French Member of the European Parliament, she faced previous struggles. She unsuccessfully tried twice to be admitted to the Academie Francai
