As the human race continues to grow and advance, the gap between current world views and the traditions of the Catholic Church widens. Science, globalization, and modern views cause people to dislocate from what feels to be a stale and antiquated Church. The refusal of the Church to reform and modernize their stagnant, and often outdated, traditions drive away the very people it seeks to serve. Without reformation and modernization, the Catholic Church faces potential extinction. However, this process must be done with thought and discretion without changing the true purpose of the Church. By removing the opulence associated with Catholicism, giving ordaining women, and allowing priests to marry, the Roman Catholic Church cannot only grow but strengthen as well. The Church has always been an incredible source of power. It has saved people for centuries, giving them faith, peace, and hope for the future. Overtime that power has amassed a great deal of wealth and influence throughout the world. It is understandable that any organization as widespread and with so many facets must be able to sustain itself. Money, therefore, is a necessity. However, wealth and power distract from the true purpose of the church. Palatial churches and residences are built. The leaders of the Church dress themselves in opulent robes and drape themselves in lavish gold and jewels. “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs,” (1 Timothy 6:10). To the modern world, the Catholic Church appears as an elitist exclusionary group. In addition, they seem to court those of financial means and power. The Church appears to only cater to themselves and seeks out those with privilege and prestige in order to enhance their own superiority.
