Plot Summary/Plot Line Introduction • There is a young boy named Paul who is the protagonist in the story. He lives with his family in a wealthy society and neighborhood. As stated in the story, they have “lived in style,” but they always had a need of money and wealth. The boy realizes or feels that the house is “haunted” as he hears the phrase “There must be more money! There must be more money!” the reader realizes that the house isn't haunted, but Paul depicts these thoughts since he hears the constant complaining of his mother regarding need of money and wealth. Trigger event: • This leads him to confront his mother, Hester, regard in the family’s lack of wealth and money. His mother replies, “it’s because your father has no luck.” This led Paul to learn and become luck to find the affection and love of his mother. The reader comes to realize that the mother ignores the children. Paul is finding and trying way in which he can attract luck. As his mother said, “it’s what causes you to have money.” This phrase triggered the event in which it became Paul's purpose in life to become lucky by earning money through betting on horses, gambling, and make his mother proud of him. • This lead Paul to ride on his wooden horse at a frenzied pace. He believed it would take him to a place in which where luck could be forced and controlled by him. He believed that he had reached that placed through horse racing and gambling. Rising Action • His uncle named Oscar visits the house and discovered that Paul has a talent and interest in horse races. His uncle discovers that Paul has been betting on horses and have been very accurate upon his predictions with the help of the gardener, Basset. Basset was aiding in waging money for the horse racing. He was trying to stop the whispering oh the houses and become lucky for his mother and win money for her too.
