The Cold War lasted 45 years with the Soviet Union and the United States. The United States was trying to fight the spread of communism, which was called containment, while the Soviet Union was trying to spread it. The United States tried to contain communism technologically, socially, and politically. America tried to keep containment for 45 years. The long Telegram was an example of containment; it was the US political goal. The Telegram was 8,000 words long that were sent to the Soviets by George Kennan. He was explaining his view to the Soviets. “it is clear that the main element of any united states policy toward the soviet union must be that of a long term patient but vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies” (Doc A.) examples of a patient containment was the Berlin Airlift and blockade. On June 27 1948 to May 12, 1949 Stalin and the Soviet Union blockaded any shipments coming into West Berlin (Doc B.) America supported West Berlin by air, flying in supplies every 3 minutes for 11 months. The airlift symbolized America’s determination to contain communism and it prevented communist spread peacefully. This proves America was going to keep containment because the Long Telegram said how George Kennan felt, and he felt that we needed to do it patiently, which led to the Berlin Airlift which prevented communism spread because Stalin removed the blockade and we help and supported West Berlin. The Truman Doctrine was a goal to aid those who worked to resist being controlled by others. It was made by President Truman to fight aggression in Greece and Turkey. Another example of Truman trying to fight aggression was the Cuban missile crisis. On October 15, 1962 US spy planes found evidence of medium range nuclear missile sites being installed in Cuba. (Doc D.) This put America’s safety in danger because our quarantine zone was in their area. On October 28, the soviets removed the missiles, and the crisis was avoided.
