The poet A.E. Stallings, expresses in her poem, "First Love: A Quiz," a great deal of hurt; being naïve and confused. When I read the title of the poem, I imagined a quiz that you take in a teen magazine to see if your crush really likes you. I believe that the title of “First Love: A Quiz” is meant to be ironic. When you see the title you automatically think it’s going to be one of those cheesy quizzes about love, but the poem to me has a much darker tone at parts. Also, thinking about the word quiz itself makes me think of something with many options. Throughout the poem, the author questions herself whether or not how the man was treating her was the way to show love or hate. When I began reading the poem, I thought she was describing a blind date that we was set up on. As she describes the third and fourth stanza, I imagined the character with her prince charming, on a romantic date with someone who makes her feel loved. She speaks about the guy seeking interest in her friend instead of her, and describes some jealousy. She begins to describe a dark time in her night in the last two stanzas. I begin to become confused when she says "he was my uncle. the one who lived in the half-finished basement, and he took me by the hair." I begin to question myself, did your uncle rape you? Did he molest you? Is he the reason why you don't know the difference between love and hate? Her uncle was the man who molested her and changed her outlook on love and hate. Family is supposed to be the people that you love, but how could someone you love, hurt you so badly? I can see where he confusion comes in for the way love and hate feels. Everyone has a friend who has the creepy uncle, who everyone was afraid of and unfortunately, "he" was her abuser. Finding out her uncle abused her, was so unexpected. As I read the poem, I wondered where her parents were while the abuse occurred. He pulled her hair and I'm sure as time progressed the abuse
