Social media, the "lovechild" of the 21st century, has in so many ways changed and warped our way of life in contemporary society. Successful websites like Friendster and MySpace have paved the way for a whole generation of various social platforms that create a vast market for the consumer to choose. Facebook reigns supreme for the time being in the personal profile market, but Twitter and Snapchat have also found a niche market to thrive in. These cyberspace apps have become our addiction and our second home where we feel no repercussions for expressing every detail of our lives no matter how minute. Consumers love how they can stay connected to their friends and family while even maintaining casual acquaintances can feel less difficult. Our inhibitions are free to leave us on the internet; Confidence oozes from all orifices. Covering the social connection, the online identity, and personal empowerment of social media will give us a much better insight into how social media changes many aspects of our lives. Never before has it been so easy to stay connected with an overwhelming number of peers simultaneously. Consumers can stay in touch with distant relatives and old school peers from middle school. Additionally, not only can we stay in touch with them, but we can see exactly what they are up to through photos, videos, posts, and status updates. Furthermore, social media platforms have even created groups, and pages which are dedicated to specialized interests, or our favorite sport teams. Massive amounts of information are bombarding our brains every day. Our smartphones alert us with sounds, vibrations, and lights to lets us know our daily fix has arrived. We reach into our pocket after each notification only to realize we reach into our pockets sometimes one too many; Scientist have coined this false sensation as Phantom Vibration Syndrome.
