Forbes magazine is a sought after source of business information and planning, spending, saving, management, strategy advice, etc.. Every year, Forbes places a ranking on the top colleges in America every year. David Wallace, author of “Kenyon Commencement Speech,” and William Deresiewicz, the author of “The Disadvantages of an Elite Education,” both strongly disagree with this rating system that the magazine has placed. Forbes magazine uses many different areas to rank these colleges, including information from the Ohio University economist Richard Vedder and his statistics on the affordability and productivity in colleges across America. Both Wallace and Deresiewicz consider what kind of students are produced from these colleges, their salaries upon graduation, and the work ethic of the students that come out of these top ranked colleges. The first disagreement these authors would have with the Forbes ranking system is on the basis of what students are produced from these schools. Ivy League schools and recently service academies battle for the number one rank in Forbes magazine’s view of the best college in America. William Deresiewicz, author of “The Disadvantages of an Elite Education,” would reject this ranking system because America has forgot the sole purpose of a great education “to make minds, not careers” (Deresiewicz 1). He also states that these top colleges are producing students that are overly concerned with “one form of intelligence: analytic” (1). This leads to top tier individuals unable to communicate with those who are of a different class or background. This “[i]vy retardation,” as stated by Deresiewicz, is due to the fact that these colleges are in isolation from those who are not like them. Deresiewicz states, “colleges are walled domains guarded by locked gates, with admission granted only to the elect” (3). The social aspect of intelligence is a key part in life and very important
