Unlike what is perceived on television and in many different dialogues, the men and women of ancient Greek culture lived very different lives and had different customs. Many of the cultures maintained similar views of what women’s roles were. Unlike in the prominent and high classed women in Greek mythology women were powerless and inferior to men. Men were considered the most important people in Greece due to the responsibility they carried and the way of Greek life. They held high positions and played a major part in politics with in Greece. Without one another, life would have been very different for the people of Greece. Greek women were looked upon as one of the lowest ranking people in Greece. They were one ranking about the slaves. They were controlled by the man of the house mainly the husband figure, considered to be property. Women weren't allowed to divorce or separate from their husbands “property owners”. The main roles of women were to care for the children, do household chores, weaving, and maintain and protect the household. Being that women had little or no education they were mostly limited to the household jobs. In some cultures such as Sparta women were allowed to read and write and have an education, opposed to Athenian women only being able to master spinning, weaving, and other domestic arts. Some parts of ancient Greece allowed the women to do more than others. Women were never able to be in the lime light. They were in their own realms secluded from man. They only appeared during certain events such as a wedding s, religious functions, or funerals where they were required to prepare and tend to the dead. They were never allowed to be hostesses when the husband had a party or special event at home. You never really saw women of her natural housewife setting.
