What causes common laborers in megacities to choose low-level jobs rather than higher salary jobs in medium-sized cities? Along with the progress of urbanization, hundreds of thousands of people are pouring into the megacities, like New York, Paris and Shanghai. The influx of laborers made outstanding contributions to the city's economy. However, most of them earn their living by doing the lower-level jobs. Oddly, when asked about the opinion of changing a job with higher salary in medium-size cities, most of them said no. In the paper, I will reveal the reasons behind this topical social phenomenon, and discuss the most prevalent opinions under the context of modernization, and present ideas that might be possible to resolve the current conflict between the personal development and the progress of urbanization. My research question for this study is “What causes common laborers in megacities to choose low-level jobs rather than higher salary jobs in medium-sized cities?” This study will consider three reasons for this urbanization: social networks, more opportunities, and social exclusion. The method of research will be having an interview with different groups of people, such as students and workers. This study will also research some articles in newspapers, journals and magazines and use the articles to support this behavior. There are many benefits to working in megacities. However, here is still space for the government to improve to resolve the current conflict between the personal development and the progress of urbanization. Literature Review This paper aims to reveal the reasons, which are behind the fact that labors keep struggling in megacities with unequal payback. Actually, a lot of studies have been made to analyze the living status of modern labor, and the characteristic of modern city. Through summarized the current situation of material and investigations around this topic, I found there are three major factors that may be the source to influence labors’ choice and attitude on struggling in megacities and earning their life with a relatively low salary.
