Kids in school these days are stressed, tired, grumpy, overwhelmed, and are being pushed to their limits. The grading system is to blame for this. Kids are competing against one another, and are focusing more on the grades they are getting then what they are being taught. Students in minority schools across the nation don't earn grades; instead they receive regular written and oral evaluations based off of their studies. It just so happens that this system is tremendously more efficient. Kids aren't stressed out; they don't compete against anyone except themselves. This method is much more efficient for learning then the grading system will ever be. The reason for this alternative method contributes to the idea that students compete against themselves instead of one another. Students are trying to improve on whatever they got on their last test. Of course, there is still going to be stress, but it's not an intolerable, unhealthy amount. This means that instead of worrying about getting a better grade than another student, they can focus on improving themselves. For example, "We need to rely more and more on working together, not against each other in order to promote the collaboration we need to teach our students how to work together towards a common goal, as the results will be far greater from a common effort than an individual" (debate website). With collaboration where will be connections with what a teacher is trying to teach a student instead of students racing to come up with something that sounds remotely close to the right answer. In this sense students will actually be learning instead of competing. Another reason the grading system isn't as effective is because how stressful it is. The stress levels of students these days are unimaginably high. The demanding amount of work they have on a day-to-day basis is outrageous. The stress could originate from the parents, teachers.
