“Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, imposing a terrible toll in health, lives, and dollars on families, businesses and government. Tobacco kills more than 400,000 people annually” (The Toll of Tobacco in the United States). Despite many of the health risks that a human body could acquire from smoking tobacco, smokers still don’t stop doing it due to numerous causes. Health risks like: cancer; lung disease; heart disease and stroke; pregnancy problems; and dental problems; are the most leading health problems that tobacco smokers are facing today. However, unscientific causes such as: individual influences; social factors; environmental influences; and the social media; can also be influential to a smoker’s desire to smoke tobacco. The cause and effect of smoking tobacco are being discussed frequently in the society, and more and more solutions to resolve this issue are being brought up worldwide; however, the more people talk about how deadly it can be to mankind, the more they get addicted of using it. It needs a serious attention and greater understanding by the public to avoid the detrimental effects from smoking it. With all medical studies regarding detrimental effects of smoking tobacco to the human body, it is given that people are aware on what tobacco can do to their body but there is still a lack of understanding on the behavioural causes it brings such as: self-esteem; curiosity; parental influence; peer pressure; and the influence of media; that also play a vital role to a smoker’s will of smoking. “Smoking and smokeless tobacco use are initiated and established primarily during adolescence. Nearly 9 out of 10 smokers started smoking by age 18, and 99% started by age 26” (Youth and Tobacco Use). Most people who smoke began as “teenagers," but why? Good question, but there is no simple answer why people start smoking in the age of thirteen or in adolescence stage. One thing for sure is the strong influence of social and family factors in smoking.
