Setting No background, two chairs, a set of stairs, and a box. A person is sitting on the stairs, facing the audience. The PERSON has three "thoughts"...THOUGHT 1 and THOUGHT 3 are sitting on the chairs situated behind and to either side of the stairs. Behind the PERSON is the box where THOUGHT 2 stands. Whenever a THOUGHT speaks, they are attempting to put doubt in the PERSON'S mind. PERSON: (reassuringly) She'll be back soon. THOUGHT 1: Are you sure about that? THOUGHT 2: Did she tell you that? THOUGHT 3: What if she isn't? PERSON: (frowning, but quickly reassures THOUGHTS) No, I-I trust her, I raised her right. THOUGHT 1: You may have raised her right, but what about her friends? THOUGHT 2: Do you trust them? Can you trust them to be around her? THOUGHT 3: Are you absolutely certain you trust her? (As the THOUGHTS have been speaking, the person starts to believe them and everything they're saying) PERSON: (trying to find a "loophole") No...but I - the girls' parents are going to be there. THOUGHT 1: They can't control everything THOUGHT 2: How do you know for sure that the girls' parents are going to be there? She could be lying. THOUGHT 3: She has lied before. PERSON: (voice breaking, more to the thoughts than herself) She'll be home soon. THOUGHT 1: You keep telling yourself that. THOUGHT 2: It's getting late. THOUGHT 3: Time's running out... ALL THOUGHTS: (slowly getting louder and louder, and faster and faster as they go through the ticking) Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tic... (Throughout this, the person becomes visibly more and more upset) PERSON: (standing up whilst pushing hands out to the side, as if to push thoughts away) Stop it. Stop it. Please, stop it. (All THOUGHTS stand up, almost circling the person) PERSON: (Makes eye contact with someone in the audience) Don't look at me like that.
