Michael O'Connor is a Director of Photography. He has been involved in films such as “The Children of Fine Mountain," a film with Michael Hughston, Fonterra commercials and many more documentaries and dramas. Michael has been working, for the first part of his career in Auckland (30 years) in television, and then moved to Christchurch, where he is now and has been for 15 years as a freelancer. He has been in the business for over 50 years, and started off training as a cameraman at the age of 17. He told us that he’d always known he “wanted to be a cameraman” (O'Connor, 2014). “My big ambition in my career was to be a drama film camera man, and I was an avid filmgoer, I watched every film that was going.” (O'Connor, 2014). A feature film called “Lawrence of Arabia” was the thing he said, inspired him the most. He said he loved not only the cinematography but the “fantastic script with a great cast” (O'Connor, 2014) also. As he was only young he had near to no experience in the television industry. “The first thing they put you on was news” (O'Connor, 2014). This way you learn how to “construct a story out of pictures.” (O'Connor, 2014). He spent a lot of his time with older, more experienced cameramen in order to gain further knowledge and know-how. In his early 20’s he was assistant cameraman on some early drama films. As he went along he experimented a lot with lighting also. He used experimentation also to test how to achieve effects. “Eventually I started operating, the dramas got bigger and bigger” (O'Connor, 2014). He operated the camera for three years and after, before advancing to director of photography, which is what he’s been doing up until present day. Like any place in the television industry, you should treat your colleagues with the same respect that you'd like to be treated. It’s so much easier when you get along with the people you work with and the outcomes are usually very
