There are an endless variety of things which that make up a society; things such as people, culture, location, social norms, etc. The societies vary in sizes and the importance each one has. Society can change in many ways and that is why they are unique. If you look around there is no society that is the same they will always be different. Society also has an impact on the people it has a great influence on us. The following paragraphs will show us examples of how these stories tell the readers the importance of society and the effects it has on the characters. Society isn't very united, the people that make up society seem to go there on way. In the poem "Waiting for the Barbarians" the Romans are getting ready for the Barbarians to come into their city. The narrator says "What are we waiting for, assembled in the forum?" (Line 1). Everyone seem to gather around in the forum it seems it is unusual for them to gather. Then the narrator says, "The barbarians are due here today" (Line 2). The Barbarians are the Roman's enemy, they will be coming to the city. We learn in the poem is when society has a common enemy they are united. We can relate to this in real life when World War II came the people that make up society were living their own life, but when the war came everyone knew that there was an enemy and they came together to fight it. The Romans didn't fight the Barbarians, they would surrender easily but they surrendered together. At the end the narrator says, "Why are the streets and squares emptying so rapidly, everyone going home lost in a thought? Because night has fallen and the barbarians haven't come" (Line 29-31). This lines assure the reader that the reason why the roman society came together but once they knew the enemy wouldn't come they just split and went back home.
