On 14th of September 2010, a baby received an accidental overdose of medication from nurse, Kimberly Hiatt. The nurse was shocked when she found out, and immediately told the nearby staff at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Seattle Children's Hospital what had happened. Giving the baby an overdose was the only serious medical mistake that Hiatt had done in her 24-year career. That mistake has had some tragic effects, which lead to the death of the 8-month old baby (Aleccia, 2011). As this example illustrates, medical failures can cause harmful effects or may lead to death. There are three major reasons of medical failures and this is important to know because people should be aware of the consequences and risks of medical errors. The first major reason for medical failure is hospitals' profit from medical errors. This means that hospitals make medical mistakes on purpose so that patients stay for a longer period of time inside the hospital. This way, insurers pay the hospital for the additional care required to treat surgical complications which were not supposed to be there in the first place. This reason is according to a study which was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. The amount of time that those patients stayed in the hospital has quadrupled to 14 days, giving the hospital an average extra $30,500 over regular patients who did not experience medical complications (Grady, 2013). The second major reason for medical failure is errors in medical devices and this happens when medical equipment fails to accomplish its intended purpose. Medical device failures can be disastrous, but they can be quickly resolved if a company takes immediate action to determine the cause of failure. There are many common
