Columbus Day - A Reason to Celebrate?

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India. Instead, he landed in present day Bahamas, thinking he had arrived in Asia. Once they landed, there were Taino indian people, it was the first time Columbus seen people with dark skin. The Taino taught Columbus and his men how to farm, survival techniques, and how to fashion clothing from buckskin. In exchange, they wanted textiles, firearms, and steel tools. After Columbus learned how to survive in the New World, he started enslaving the Taino and even killed them. He did kill the Taino, but most of them died by diseases that Europeans brought with them, like small pox. Not everyone knows that, they think of Columbus as a mass murderer. There are many bad things that happened in history which make America the way it is today. Columbus has set into motion a series of events that will change human history, many of which are good and many are bad. Back then Columbus didn't even know if the Taino were even human beings because of the color of their skin. He didn't know what was right or wrong, he thought killing the Taino was right. Even though I think Columbus Day should be celebrated, I don't think what he did was right. Today countries invade other countries for land and natural resources. Many innocents were slaughtered, it happens all the time in history, just look at the past and you'll see what I mean.   Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of an exchange between America and Europe. Columbus was the first person from Europe to come to the New World. After he arrived, millions of other Europeans did too who brought their art, music, science, medicine, and religious practices to America. These contributions have helped shape the United States. When Columbus arrived to the New World, it was unused and undeveloped, even though there were others who lived there for thousands of years. Life back then was short, bru
