In order for Henry David Thoreau to test his theory of the simple life, he isolated himself from society to live a solitary life in a cabin miles away from society. He escapes the pressures of society and writes down all of his observations. Thoreau thinks that competition is not good for us because it drives us crazy. He also says that competition is not natural and it's bestowed upon it. Whether it's sports or education or something else, competition is around us. Competition is not for everyone. I disagree with Thoreau because competition is a wonderful thing to have in life. It's what drives us to do our best at everything we do. When famous athletes like LeBron James takes the court in a basketball game, he does everything he can to ensure the Miami Heat wins. James wants to win a championship every year. He did whatever it took to get that title. He even left his hometown Cleveland and broke the hearts of millions of Cleveland Cavalier fans. James wants to be considered one the greatest of all time but he couldn't be involved in that conversation without a championship. When he finally did win a championship, the emotions from LeBron were pouring out because it is something that he has been chasing for many years. He loves to compete and tries to win a championship every year. When it's time to shine, that's when James plays his best. If James didn't care about competition, he wouldn't be in the NBA. Competition forces us to work hard in order the stand above the rest. Tiger Woods for example is a really competitive person. All of the other players are very talented and it's an elite group of players that play on the PGA tour. So it's important to stay one step ahead of the competition.
