Global Warming and Saving Our Planet

The topic of global warming has risen to be one of the most controversial and most debated topics in not only the nation but the world. Public concern regarding global warming has come and gone over the past few decades, and is once again in the forefront of scientific interest as well as public interest. A survey of 3146 earth scientists asked the question "Do you think human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures?" (Doran 2009). More than 90% of participants had Ph.D.s, and 7% had master's degrees. Overall, 82% of the scientists answered yes. Due to the recent increase in extreme weather patterns even the average person can see the way the world is changing. By using new technology to record and monitor these changes, scientists today have a better idea of what direction earth is heading and what may have caused these adverse changes. "The latest data from across the globe show that the planet is changing faster than expected." More sea ice around the Arctic Ocean is disappearing than had been forecast (Carey, 2012). Carbon Dioxide levels are reaching very dangerous levels, and the rising sea levels and sea temperatures are all major contributors that are kicked into high gear by the global warming effect. Like any debatable topic there are always skeptics, "If we listen to the coal, gas, and oil industry experts, we have nothing to worry about. The increase in greenhouse gases that trap heat and make the planet warmer is the result of long natural cycles which in due time will reverse themselves" (Sharpe, 2012). Now just by looking and trends such as the ice age that have occurred in the past that may be partially believable. But the fact that global warming has not only increased, but accelerated over the past 150 years as the burning of fossil fuels has increased is directly related to the rise in the world's industrial production. This issue isn't just any other debatable topic, it's something that has an impact on anyone that is alive in this world today and also our future generations. Wasting time not making changes and listening to "big business" with billions of dollars of profit interests try and brainwash people with skepticism is a huge mistake. There are many newly developed scientific studies and models that tell a different story. "A new study by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) corroborates the theory that greenhouse gases generated by human activity, not changes in solar activity are causing global warming" (Jones J. , 2012). Not only do I say that we as humans have caused this accelerated trend in global warming, I also think that we can have positive effects on the solution to global warming. One of the most talked about effects that have been linked to the global warming trend is the rise to dangerous levels of Carbon Dioxide stuck in the planet's atmosphere. "Keeping planetary warming below two degrees Celsius would, it was thought, avoid such perils as catastrophic sea-level rise and searing droughts. Staying below two degrees C would require limiting the level of heat-trapping carbon d
