Japan: Natural Disasters and the World's Tourism Industry

Tourism is one of the important sectors of global economy. There were several world events affecting the workers in the tourism industry, including both natural and human activities. For the natural activities, the earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011 which had great effect on the tourism industry in recent years. According to "Up Front," it was incurred about $360 billion economic losses in Japan and more than 138,000 building were destroyed by this disaster (Solís, 1). Japan was facing a huge problem because of this destructive natural disaster, and the number of international tourism was dropped from 8.6 million in 2010, which was the year before disaster, to 6.2 million people in 2011 (Beirman, 1). And the main reason for this rapid decreased number of tourism were the fear of the widespread radiation to human. While the effect of the natural disaster on the tourism industry in Japan was only a short term effect, since the number of tourism was increased to over 10000 thousand in 2013 (Tourism Statistics). Another example of natural disaster is volcanic eruptions, it has several negative effects on the tourism industry. First, when there is volcanic activities, the ash will spewed into atmosphere, and it will disrupt the air transport. When the air transport is disrupted, the number of tourism will be much lower. Second, visitors are not willing to visit a place with bad air quality, while those ash may even lead to health problem. On another side, it also has some positive effect. There some places have made the volcanoes become the site for visitors which attracts many visitors every year. For example, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the park which visitors can walk along Crater Chain Road and enjoyed the view of volcanoes.
