Overview of the Leading Muslim Holidays

Along with Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and Buddhism, the Islamic faith is one of the worlds most practiced religions. Islam is a monotheistic faith which developed in the Middle East in the 7th century C.E. It quickly expanded beyond its birthplace in the Arabian Peninsula, and now has significant influence in Africa, throughout Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Many consider Muhammad to be the founder of the Islamic faith however there is really no founder of the religion Islam. The Quran is the holy book of Islam. Islam is a religion that wasn't named after a person unlike other religions such as Christianity which was named after Jesus, Buddhism after Gotama Buddha, and Confucianism after Confucius and Marxism after Karl Marx. It is a religion of "Allah  and its name represents the total submission to the will of Allah "God." The word "Islam" means the submission of one's will to worship Allah, and anyone who does so is known as a "Muslim." Islamic practices are defined by the Five Pillars of Islam which are Shahadah, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj. Every religion has major holidays which are recognized around the world. Unfortunately Muslim holidays are not recognized in the United States even though Muslim populations are extremely huge in the States. Many have tried pushing for Muslim holidays for years but they all failed. Recently, three homeschooled Muslim middle school students from Virginia put together a petition as an assignment in their school, asking the white house to have public schools recognize Muslim Holidays. They argue that "With the growing population of Muslims in the United States of America" (including first, second, third, and fourth generation) we believe it is high time that Muslim holidays are recognized by schools throughout this nation. Unfortunately many Muslim families are forced to choose between their children's education and their religious obligations. Muslim school children and staff deserve the same benefits afforded to the followers of other faiths. We call on President Obama to support this petition and advance the inclusiveness of our great nation. Unfortunately, the petition failed because there weren't enough signatures for the petition to reach to the white house (Hallowell).
