“Click”...A new window opens up Google Chrome. The first tab that is open is Facebook, the second one Tumblr, and last but not least, Twitter. All are popular social networking sites that teenagers use in order to keep up with their friends. Teenagers use these sites in order to manage their impressions on others, keep up with their friends, make new friendships, and stay in the loop with what is happening within their friend circles or communities. In this paper, a teenager was interviewed in order to find out how she managed her impressions online, stayed socially connected, dealt with her social capital and with problems that occurred online. Methodology and Demographics In order to get some in-depth information about social networking sites, I interviewed someone I believed knew her way around lots of different social networking sites. The girl that I interviewed for this paper is currently a high school senior in Arlington, Texas. Her name is Michelle and she is 17 years old. She is someone that I have known for a long time and our families have been friends for quite a while. Michelle is someone who is always on her phone, looking at texts messages or checking her Facebook to see if she has gotten any notifications. She participates in many clubs in her school and is currently the President of the Key Club at her school making her very well-known to her peers. From what I know, Michelle keeps her online information private from her parents and from people she does not know and makes sure to take extra care of what she posts. Participation The very first question that I asked was a very simple question that most people would have the same answer to, “What are the main reasons you use social media?” Michelle (2014) responded with: "I mean, all my friends are on it so I use it to talk to my friends. If I ever need help on homework or study guide help, I just go onto the class group to get the information. And you know that since I’m in a lot of clubs and do a lot of extracurricular activities, I also use Facebook keep up with all the events that are happening so I can plan my schedule. With Twitter and Instagram, I can always know what my friends are up to and where they are." She answered this quickly and calmly without a second thought. Her answer helps to prove the fact that just like in what Boyd says about teens joining Myspace, it is a way for teens “to maintain connections with their friends” (Boyd, 2008). It also helps her to keep up with all of the work she has to do and to fit everything she needs to do on her schedule. Online Connections Being the President of a very prestigious club comes with its benefits but also comes with the addition of people that you only meet once at a conference and you will never know if you will ever see them again or
