Is it possible for a middle-aged man to be in love with a twelve-year-old child? In Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel, "Lolita," the author leads his readers to question whether or not the protagonist Humbert Humbert’s love for Lolita was genuine. The fact that love is defined as an affectionate concern for the well being of another person. Humbert never cared about what Lolita needed, his only concern was how to satisfy his own sexual desires. You seldom hear him talk about her as an actual person, but rather objectify her. While, he may feel like he is utterly in love with Lolita, the fact remains clear that Humbert is a lascivious older man chasing after a little girl. From the very beginning, Humbert makes his intentions with Lolita clear. He salivates over her at their first meeting, detailing all of her physical traits down to the mole on her back. Humbert expresses: I was still walking behind Mrs. Haze through the dining room when, beyond it, there came a sudden burst of greenery–– “the piazza,” sang out my leader, and then, without the least warning, a blue sea-wave swelled under my heart and, from a mat in a pool of sun, half-naked, kneeling, turning about on her knees, there was my Riviera love peering at me over glasses." After he moves into the Haze house he does everything he can, without making his true intentions too obvious to Charlotte, which were to stay close to his Lolita. Humbert reveals, “Bland American Charlotte frightened me. My lighthearted dream of controlling her through her passion for me was all wrong. I dared not do anything to spoil the image of me she has set up to adore.” (83) He was a wild animal and Lolita was his prey. While at times she seems to engage in flirting with Humbert, it’s indubitable that her feelings for him are not the same.
