The hajj is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca and the largest gathering of Muslim people in the world every year. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, and a religious duty which must be carried out by every able-bodied Muslim. The Hajj is the ultimate form of worship, as it involves the spirit of all the other rituals and demands of the believer great spiritual and physical sacrifice. Muslims use hajj to help them be clear of their sins and remove their blindness caused by sin, Temptation and the materialistic lifestyle of the western world. Certain aspects of hajj allow an Islamic adherent to remove their blindness including “Wafiq, stoning of the wall and Tawaf." The stimulus quote “anyone who had been blind in this world, will be blind in the hereafter and more aberrant from the path” demonstrates the blindness of many Muslims in regards to becoming closer with Allah and gaining access into heaven. These distinct aspects of “Hajj” enable the metaphorical blindfold to be lifted and put a Muslim in the position to create a clear path to the hereafter. The Hajj contains numerous amounts of practices which put Islamic adherents in the position to remove the metaphorical blindness caused by the Western lifestyle. One includes “Wafuq” or “Arafat”. On the ninth day pilgrims leave Mina for Mt Arafat where they stand in contemplative vigil and pray and recite the Qur'an, near a hill from which Muhammad gave his last sermon. During Arafat pilgrims are in their simplest form with their “ihram” clothing, everybody is equal and this is done in rehearsal for judgment day. “There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty from your Lord [during Hajj]. But when you depart from 'Arafat, remember Allah at al- Mash'ar al-haram. And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray.” (surah l-baqarah 2:198) this quote exemplifies the guidance and wisdom Allah delivers to Muslim adherents.
