?After the controversial MTV Music Awards, it became obvious to Melinda Tankard Reist that the majority of female entertainers are portraying themselves as overly sexualized figures. In an outraged tone, Tankard Reist, expresses her opinion on the issue in a piece called “Miley’s Bum Note." Reist quickly establishes the main contention that girls deserve to see a performer who isn't exploited by men and the industry, or as Tankard Reist terms, “sexual puppets." Included in her article, a cartoon revealing Miley Cyrus "twerking" her bum in the air helps the reader to concur with the writer’s opinion: women are portraying themselves as foolish, oversexed, attention-starved tramps. Tankard Reist employs persuasive devices, such as praise, evidence and attacks to engage the reader with the piece. By relentlessly attacking the opposing view, the author leads us to accept that we agree with how disgusting it is to see women being portrayed as over sexualized figures in the media. With the use of attack Reist convinced us to think badly about the unsuitable actions famous women are performing. If you take a look at Reist article she uses the persuasive device of attack by saying, “it may be porny, but it is far from erotic” this helps us realize that those famous women may think that it is sexy to act like this, but they are just making a fool out of themselves. Reist described Miley Cyrus’s MTV music awards as “one of the most desexed stage performances I have seen” which showed us how Miley Cyrus’ performance was a distorted version of female sexuality. Reist’s use of attack positioned us to think badly about the way female celebrities are acting, as girls deserve to have a female performer remodel, who respects themselves and refuses to give in to standard expectations in the music industry.
