Raymond Carver's, "Cathedral"  Prompt #1: What does "blindness" symbolize in our culture? How does Carver's story reinforce or undermine that symbolism? Response From my perspective blindness in our culture is usually misunderstood. This misunderstanding is a very easy one to make since there are such a small percentage of blind people in the world. So most people will get there information on what how a blind person will act and be from what they read in book, see on TV, or hear on the radio. As you know this is not usually a very good source of information on any topic much less how a hole group of people will act. Now as the story Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," show us a person usually acts very differently than the way you would stereotype the group they come from. What I see from the forms of entertainment that I have picked up my information from. Blind people should not be able to get around on their own, they will need a great deal of help, they are generally crabby, they walk with a walking stick, and they wear mismatched clothes because they don't know any better. Now off the top of my head I can obviously count out some of those stereotypes. For instance I know that some blind people will use service dogs to help them get around instead of a walking stick. I would imagine for the most part that blind people can get around on their own with minimal assistance.
