Internet Use and Productivity in the Workplace

In the 21st century, the internet is used by millions around the world. People go online whenever they are at home or at work. However, using the Internet like a habit also makes it easy to misuse it and can result in wasted time and money. People spend time to surf on the Internet and forget what they have to do at work. For this reason, companies should restrict their employees’ Internet use in the workplace. First of all, every company requires the new employee to sign a contract. In a contract, it usually has the rules at work and employees’ benefits. For example, a contract usually states how many hours an employee has to work a day, how many days a week, or which day employees can take a day off. Furthermore, a contract also says what an employee can do or cannot do at work. This also includes the employees’ Internet use in the workplace because most of the working time is on the computer and Internet. After signing the contract, the employees have the responsibility to obey whatever is written on that or they will lose their benefit and get fired. Based on the contract, while the employees are working, they can't not access on the Internet to do their personal activities. Second, many companies should restrict their employees’ Internet use in the workplace to increase productivity. According to a study by Advertising Age magazine, “in 2005, American workers spent the equivalent of 2.3 million years’ worth of 40-hour workweeks reading nonwork-related blogs while at work” (2006). It seems like there is a potential loss of profit for the company when its employees do not stay focused on their job. The most important thing to get a good productivity is the concentrate. Nobody can have a great idea or reach to the best situation if they are usually surfing at work. Staying focused on one activity always has better result than doing two activities at the same time.
