I believe that being able to genetically modify your babies before they are born should made legal. I am talking about making a healthier generation where hereditary diseases are not an issue, where we don’t have serious medical bills and where we have a smarter generation to put unemployment to rest. These are the reasons why designer babies should be legalized. Firstly, by using genetic techniques we can help prevent hereditary and life threatening diseases in all children. 150,000 children are born every year in American with birth defects, this means there is a mental or physical disability present at birth, it could be fatal. With legalising genetic modification we are able to scan for all these traits during the process of IVF and isolate the gene carrying the defected trait. We can prevent diseases such as Huntington’s or Down Syndrome think of all the money the government and these loving parents could save. Secondly, using genetic modification may not be cheap but when you think of how many medical bills it could prevent we are actually saving money. One in seventeen Americans suffer with serious mental illnesses and over half of those go without treatment. In the state of Colorado untreated mental illnesses costs 5.4 billion dollars that’s $1,000 per resident. 1/5 of those are hereditary. This means we can save Colorado alone approx. 1.1 billion dollars. The economy will benefit greatly as there won't be a drain on medical bills. Even without being able to prevent all mental illnesses with a higher IQ of our modern race we can find cures more easily. This is just another reason why genetic modification should be legalised. Thirdly, by implementing the plan of legalizing Designer Babies we will be able to heighten the IQ of all children, improving our society.
