According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, the average American guzzles 44.7 gallons of soda every year, which is just right to fill the size of a small kiddie pool. Americans cannot deny the fact that the soda industry has infused the lives of most Americans. In response to this alarming issue, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a soda ban law which will prevent restaurants from selling sodas larger than 16 ounces. Although there are some other food and beverages that contains a large amount of sugar that may lead to obesity, Bloomberg states that soda is the major contributor to the dramatic increase in the number of obese people in America. Banning soda will decrease the percentage rate of diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. This will also help the economy because instead of the government spending billions of dollars fighting obesity they could have spent it on housing programs or better yet, on education. The government should be allowed to ban soda because banning it reduces the number of obese people, promotes a more health-friendly society and is financially helpful. One of the government's most helpful ways of decreasing the number of obese people is simply by banning soda. According to the statistical records of the World Health Organization, "2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being obese." Obesity is one of the leading causes of death; thus, urgent efforts must be undertaken to fight its underlying causes, as it turned epidemic. There are many reasons for obesity.
