Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jungle" in 1906 to promote socialism as it described the journey of Lithuanian immigrants to the U.S. in the early 20th century. The book becomes famous for a totally different reason than to promote socialism. What caught the public attention in the book wasn't socialism but was rather the horror of meat packing industries. Upton Sinclair was very happy about that, but nonetheless it has achieved a considerable amount of fame and get the message of socialism is better than communism to the general public. There are many different characters in the jungle, and these characters are different in many aspects: social status, economic status and occupation. Each character has their own meaning to their roles. Jurgis Rudkus is the main character of the novel, he is a Lithuanian immigrant trying to support his family in America. He has a wife named Ona Lukoszaite, and a son named Antanas, both are also Lithuania, but his son died not too long after give birth, it was a turning point for Jurgis. Phil Jack Duane is an experienced criminal and training as well as "political connections." Connor is a foreman in Packingtown through Scully 's political connections, and a man who causes problems for Jurgis. Hundreds of thousands of European immigrants had come to the U.S. in the late 1800's and the early 1900's. They have a desire for success, prosperity and their own conception of the American Dream. Most immigrants believe that their lives will be completely changed for the better and the new world will bring nothing but happiness. Advertising in Europe appears to provide a bright future and economic stability for the innocent and hopeful. Jobs with high wages and working conditions, safety elements, and the benefits seem to be a chance in a lifetime to foreigners in trouble.
