College Students - An Argument for Extended Summer Breaks

Good afternoon distinguished highly esteemed board of directors. I come to you today to offer a proposition; one that will be beneficial to yourself as well as that of our district schools. My proposal includes the lengthening of summer break by one month, and in this case, the month of June. I understand that you might think this idea is absurd and biased due to the fact that I am a student, but I have taken this all into account and will now list the contentions and their benefits to prove that having June as an extra month of summer will benefit both students and faculty. My first contention is that May is known as the testing month to many students at Torrance High. Students have the CST’s, AP tests, SAT’s and ACT’s for some and now Common Core, not to mention the tests us students already have in classes. During the month of May, students will study that extra twenty percent to pass for the incentives teachers will give or for personal benefits, like higher advantages for college admissions. So with all these tests is it really necessary to have the month of June? Sure students have finals in June to cover what they have learned throughout the year, but isn’t that the whole point of all these tests in May? The results of those tests should be enough to see whether a student has learned or not, because everything in the tests in May cover all the curriculum we should have learned. June is an unnecessary month, most teachers don’t even give finals and will have a party the last day of school. Shortening the school year can make students put more effort into their schoolwork. I have never met a student who has said “I want to fail," students always try whether they have had a bad day or failed a test. If the teacher gives the student the opportunity to raise their grade, the chance will be indubitably met. One less month means eight months of school days so approximately four months per semester. Having a shorter amount of time will reinforce the student to try harder to bring their grade up to pass the class in a limited amount of time. And this tactic will help in the long run for those students that will be going to college where there could be only two months worth of school days per semester. Directors, do you love your family? Do you enjoy being away from your loved ones at work? Do you enjoy missing out on the stepping stones of your child’s life? And for those without c
