Students and the "Gap" Year

Question Some students prefer to take a gap year while others would rather enter university after high school graduation? Which do you prefer? Response Some students may claim that a gap year is quite beneficial for them. However, in my opinion, it is still risky that students go for a gap year. First of all, students are prone to misunderstand the notion of a gap year. In this period of time, a student is supposed to take on some part-full time or voluntary jobs with the aim of gaining experience, developing social skills, knowledge. Nevertheless, many of students still regularly allow themselves to enjoy their lives, spending their time on sleeping, traveling, playing video games. As a result, in spite of themselves earning money and collecting experience, they actually waste their time and even money, obtaining nothing. To this issue, Butoni (2013) proposes that students mistake a gap year for relaxing time. They usually stay at home and take part in non-beneficial affair. Furthermore, they may lose their motivation to return universities after the gap year. Once, they did not themselves earn money and when they did, they feel extremely satisfied with the amount they make on their own. Gradually, they grow accustomed to the job routine, they definitely hesitate to have a thought of a comeback. In this case, they fail to realize how important it is to study in university in order to get well-paid jobs in the future. In regard to this, Neil and Demand (n.d) both agree that the period of nine to twelve months is likely to sabotage students’ ability to learn if they do not attend class. The motivation to study may elude them and they will find it so hard to adapt to study environment when returning. Finally, students are also delayed entering the labor market by a gap year.
