In his article, Wolverton tries to persuade and inform his readers that NCAA football coaches have too much power and that coaches are putting players at risk for increased risk of injury. Wolverton does a great job supporting his opinion with various types of rhetorical appeals, including logos, pathos, and kairos to make a unique, and informative article, and to also persuade the audience, which in this case are the college students from that college, and the players from that team to support his viewpoint. Coaches should not have the power to fire athletic trainers for not wanting to put an injured player in the game, and it should be the athletic trainer's decision whether or not a player can be put back in the game, not the coach's decision. Wolverton uses various situations and evidence with pathos to grab the reader's attention and persuades them to feel bad for the players and the trainers. To start off Wolverton places a great subtitle under the main title of the article that reads "Athletic trainers who butt heads with coaches over concussion treatment take career hits. This is a great way to grab the reader's attention because it uses the rhetorical appeal of pathos. This subtitle gives the readers something to think about and it may make the audience feel bad because it explains that trainers are stuck in a conflict of interest with coaches about playing injured players. Another good example or piece of evidence is when Wolverton mentions that "The subject is so sensitive that few athletic trainers are willing to speak publicly about it, for fear of losing their jobs. This is also a good example of pathos because it makes the reader feel like the trainers could lose their job for doing the right thing.
