Legalizing Marijuana - Not Good for America

The legalization of marijuana is a highly heated and controversial issue in America today. Data shows that over 55% of Americans believe marijuana should continue to be illegal and the remaining 45% believe the pot's legal status should be altered. Marijuana should not be legalized in the United States, because the facts shows that marijuana affecting a lot of crimes, accidents, for teenagers getting a lower grades than non-smokers. However, marijuana does not kill brain cells or damage the immune system. The fact about marijuana: it is a mixture of the dried and shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the cannabis sativa plant. The mixture can be green, brown, or gray. Also, marijuana has a chemical in it called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as THC. A lot of other chemicals are found in marijuana, too ”about 400 of them, many of which could affect your health. But THC is the main psychoactive (i.e., mind altering) ingredient. In fact, marijuana's strength or potency is related to the amount of THC it contains. The THC content of marijuana has been increasing since the 1970s. Estimates from confiscated marijuana indicated that it contains almost 10 percent THC, on average" (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2013). The fact shows that it does not has any harmful effect, it does not kill brain cells. Marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia  from 1850 until 1942 and was prescribed for various conditions including labor pains, nausea, and rheumatism. Its use as an intoxicant was also commonplace from the 1850s to the 1930s. A campaign conducted in the 1930s by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Narcotics (now the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs) sought to portray marijuana as a powerful, addictive substance that would lead users into narcotics addiction. First of all, the use of marijuana should not be legalized, because the drug decimates many people's lives. For instance, students who use marijuana have lower grades and are less likely to get into college than nonsmokers. They simply do not have the same abilities to remember and organize information compared to those who do not use these substances. A study of 129 college students found that, among those who smoked the drug at least twenty-seven of the thirty days before being surveyed, critical skills related to attention, memory and learning were seriously diminished. A study of postal workers found that employees who tested positive for marijuana had 55% more accidents, 85% more injuries and a 75% increase in being absent from work. In Australia, a study found that cannabis intoxication was responsible for 4.3% of driver fatalities (Kaslin 2014). The fact shows that the bad effect of marijuana causes so many problems in U.S. If the U.S. were to legalize marijuana, the number of marijuana users would increase. T
