In an excerpt from the book, "Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders," by Marjorie Soloman, the author discusses some successful techniques for children with Asperger's Syndrome and/or those on the high- functioning Autism spectrum. Soloman conducted a "20-week social adjustment enhancement curriculum for boys aged 8-12" (Springer). In the introduction, Soloman introduces the treatment plan, and why it was being used specifically for this study. Soloman also references over 115 other articles and studies that are also helpful for her to create her book. She continues on in the first paragraph about the Core Defects and references many other studies and cases from the past few years. Further into the second paragraph, Soloman starts to discuss the fact of children with Asperger's tend to not pick up on facial expressions of others around them and use verbal or written queues on how people are feeling and their thoughts on certain topics. They cant read peoples faces and have their brain connect what they saw to emotions or social knowledge. I wish I could have read the entire book, or more than just the first page. Just from the first few paragraphs I read, I learned a lot about the spectrum and how some interventions are handled for certain students and adolescents. I chose this article because of my cousin, who grew up so close to me; he is pretty much my brother. His name is Derek and he is 20 years old. Derek wasn't diagnosed with Aspergers until he was in middle school, so he got bullied his whole childhood because he was different than all the other kids and didn't understand what was happening in class as fast as the rest of the students. Although Derek struggled in school settings, he excelled in everything else. He could tell you anything ”and everything there is to know about 99.5% of the NASCAR drivers, and their cars, and their racing record."
